Souvlaki is, at its heart, street food. It was designed to be eaten standing up, walking through a laneway, sitting on a bench. The whole point of a souvlaki wrap is that it travels — pita folded around grilled meat, tzatziki, tomato, onion, and sometimes chips, all held together with a sheet of paper and a prayer. It is one of the oldest takeaway meals in the world, and it remains one of the best.
We run four restaurants across Melbourne — Southbank, Docklands, Eastland Ringwood and Craigieburn — and a significant part of our lunch trade is people grabbing souvlaki to go. We've learned a lot about what works for takeaway, what doesn't, and how to make sure your food tastes just as good when you get it back to the office or home.
Is souvlaki good for takeaway?
The short answer: absolutely. But not everything on a Greek menu is built the same way for travel. The key is knowing what to order.
Wraps are your best bet. A well-made souvlaki wrap is structurally engineered for portability. The pita holds everything in. The tzatziki acts as a binding agent. Nothing falls apart, nothing goes cold too quickly, and the flavours actually develop a bit as they sit together. If you're ordering takeaway for the first time, start with wraps — lamb or chicken, charcoal-grilled, with the standard tzatziki and salad.
Gyros boxes work well too. These are the deconstructed version — sliced meat off the spit, pita on the side, tzatziki and salad in their own compartments. They reheat decently if you need to eat later, and they give you control over assembly. Good for desk lunches where you want to eat at your own pace.
What doesn't travel as well: large sharing platters, anything with flambeed cheese (saganaki loses its magic within minutes of leaving the pan), and seafood dishes that depend on being served immediately. If you want those, come and sit down — they're meant for the table.
"We designed our takeaway packaging specifically so the pita doesn't go soggy. That was the one thing we refused to compromise on."
What is premium casual dining?
People sometimes ask us what kind of restaurant Yassas is. We're not fast food — we don't have a heat lamp or a bain-marie. But we're not white tablecloth either. The term we use internally is premium casual, and it describes a specific approach to food and hospitality that we think Melbourne does better than almost any other city.
Premium casual means the ingredients are restaurant-grade. Our meats are halal-certified and sourced from butchers we've worked with for years. The tzatziki is made fresh in-house. The pita is warmed to order. The charcoal grill — where we use it — is real charcoal, not gas with wood chips thrown on for show. The food is genuinely good, made with care, and prepared by cooks who know what they're doing.
But the atmosphere is relaxed. There's no dress code. You can come in after the gym or straight from work. Kids are welcome — they eat free Monday to Thursday at all four venues. You don't need to book for lunch (though it helps for dinner). The service is warm but not hovering. We want you to feel comfortable, not watched.
This matters for takeaway because it means you're getting proper food in a takeaway container. Not reheated components from a production kitchen, but the same lamb souvlaki that the person at the next table is eating with a knife and fork. The only difference is the packaging.
Quick lunch? We've got you.

How long does souvlaki take to prepare?
This is one of the most common questions we get from people ordering takeaway, especially during lunch when time is tight. Here's an honest breakdown of our prep times:
- Souvlaki wraps: 8 to 12 minutes from the time you order. The meat is grilled to order (not sitting in a warmer), the pita is heated, and everything is assembled fresh. If the kitchen is quiet, closer to 8. During peak lunch, closer to 12.
- Plate meals with sides: 12 to 15 minutes. These include your choice of meat with rice or chips, salad and tzatziki. The extra time is mostly the sides coming together.
- Sharing platters and Feed Me: 20 minutes or more. These are multi-component dishes designed for groups and they're prepared in sequence. Not ideal for a quick lunch, but perfect for a planned dinner.
One thing worth understanding: charcoal takes longer than gas. A gas grill gets to temperature almost instantly and cooks predictably. Charcoal requires more attention, creates uneven heat zones (which is actually what gives the meat its character), and needs the cook to manage the process more actively. The result is meat with genuine smokiness and caramelisation that you simply cannot get from gas. It adds a few minutes to the cook time, and it is worth every one of those minutes.
If you're on a tight lunch break, our recommendation is to call ahead or order online 15 minutes before you plan to collect. That way your food is ready when you arrive and still warm when you sit down to eat it.
Can I order souvlaki online?
Yes, and we've made it as straightforward as possible. There are three ways to get Yassas souvlaki without sitting down at a table:
- UberEats delivery: All four Yassas venues are available on UberEats. You can order the full menu for delivery to your home or office. Delivery times depend on distance and demand, but wraps and boxes travel well in our packaging.
- Phone ordering for pickup: Call your nearest venue directly, place your order, and collect it when it's ready. This is the fastest option for lunch — no delivery wait, no platform fees, and you can time your collection precisely.
- Walk-in takeaway: Just come in, order at the counter, and wait. During quiet periods this is perfectly quick. During Friday and Saturday dinner service, calling ahead will save you time.
For larger orders — office lunches, team celebrations, or family gatherings — we also offer catering packages that are specifically designed for group takeaway. These include platters, wraps by the dozen, and sides portioned for sharing. Give us 24 hours notice and we'll have everything ready.
Takeaway vs dine-in — when each is better
We genuinely believe some things are better eaten in the restaurant and some things are perfectly suited to takeaway. Here's our honest take:
When takeaway is the right call
- Quick weekday lunch: You have 30 to 45 minutes. A souvlaki wrap or gyros box is ready fast, travels well, and doesn't need cutlery. This is peak takeaway territory.
- Dinner sorted on the way home: Pick up wraps or a mixed box for the family. Everyone gets fed, nobody has to cook, and it's better than the alternatives in the drive-through lane.
- Office catering: Wraps and boxes are self-contained, easy to distribute, and don't require plates or complicated setup. Order a mix of lamb, chicken and falafel and let people choose.
- Solo meals: Sometimes you just want good food without the restaurant experience. No judgement — we eat our own takeaway more often than we'd admit.
When you should dine in
- Sharing platters and Feed Me: These are designed for the table. Multiple courses, different temperatures, dishes that arrive in sequence. The experience matters as much as the food.
- Saganaki and flambeed dishes: Kefalograviera cheese, set alight tableside, served bubbling. It has a shelf life of about 90 seconds before it starts to firm up. This is strictly a dine-in dish.
- Seafood: Grilled octopus, prawns, the seafood platter — all of these are best eaten immediately. The texture changes within minutes of leaving the kitchen.
- Date nights and celebrations: The ambiance at Southbank overlooking the river, the energy of a Friday night at Docklands near Marvel Stadium — these are part of what you're paying for. Takeaway doesn't include the view.
- Bottomless brunch: Obviously. You can't take bottomless drinks home.
The rule of thumb is simple: if it's wrapped in pita, it travels. If it arrives on a hot plate or involves fire, eat it at the table. Everything in between is your call.
"The best souvlaki takeaway order is the simplest one. Two wraps, extra tzatziki, and a cold drink. Don't overthink it."
Tips for ordering souvlaki takeaway
After years of watching what works and what doesn't, here are our practical recommendations for getting the most out of your takeaway order:
- Stick to wraps and boxes for travel. They're designed for it. Plate meals are fine if you're eating within 10 minutes, but wraps stay good for 20 to 30 minutes easily.
- Ask for extra pita. It's inexpensive and having spare pita means you can scoop up any tzatziki or sauce that escapes from the wrap. We never judge anyone for ordering extra pita.
- Order tzatziki on the side for longer trips. If your commute is more than 15 minutes, having the tzatziki in a separate container means your pita stays intact and the salad stays crisp.
- Call ahead during peak times. Friday lunch, Saturday dinner — these are our busiest periods. A 10-minute phone call saves you a 15-minute wait at the venue.
- Don't order platters for takeaway. We'll do it if you ask, but we'd rather be honest: a mixed grill platter is built for the table. The components cool at different rates, the presentation doesn't survive the container, and half the experience is watching it arrive. Save the platters for dine-in.
Halal souvlaki takeaway across Melbourne
All meats at every Yassas venue are halal-certified. This applies to dine-in and takeaway equally — same suppliers, same certification, same kitchen. If halal is a requirement for you or your family, you don't need to ask. It's standard across everything we serve, at all four locations.
