There's a reason Greek food works so well on a date night. It's not trying to impress you with foams or tweezered micro-herbs. It's generous, unfussy, and designed to be passed across the table. You tear the pita together. You argue over the last piece of saganaki. You pour each other wine. The whole meal becomes a conversation, not a performance.
We've watched thousands of date nights play out across our four Melbourne venues since 2018, and we can tell you this: the couples who order a spread of sharing plates always have a better time than the ones who order individual mains and eat in parallel. Greek dining is inherently social. That's not a marketing line — it's how the food is structured.
Is Greek food good for date night?
It's one of the best cuisines for it. The entire Greek dining tradition revolves around the idea of sharing — small plates arrive throughout the meal, you eat at a pace that encourages conversation, and the food itself is interactive. You dip bread into tzatziki. You squeeze lemon over grilled meats. You pass plates back and forth. There's a natural rhythm to it that takes the pressure off and lets the evening unfold.
Compare that with a formal fine-dining meal where you're both staring at your own plate, worried about using the wrong fork, and watching the bill climb. Greek food is quality without the pretension. The ingredients are simple and good — olive oil, lemon, fresh herbs, quality meat over charcoal — and the atmosphere at a Greek table is warm by default.
"Greek food isn't about impressing someone. It's about enjoying each other's company over something genuinely good."
Can I get souvlaki for date night?
You absolutely can, but think beyond the wrap. A souvlaki wrap eaten standing up on the street is brilliant — but for a date night, you want the sit-down version. Order souvlaki as one of your mains alongside a spread of meze and salad. The charcoal-grilled lamb or chicken becomes part of a larger table rather than a solo meal. It's the same quality meat, the same grill, the same marinade — just presented as part of a shared experience.
If you really want to take the pressure off ordering, our Feed Me experience lets the kitchen curate the meal for you. You sit down, tell us any dietary requirements, and we bring out a progression of dishes — dips, meze, mains, dessert — all timed so you can focus on each other instead of the menu. It's the easiest way to have a great evening without making a single decision about food.
Where to go: choosing the right venue for your date
Each of our four venues has a different energy, and the right choice depends on what kind of date you're planning. Here's an honest breakdown.
Southbank — sunset views and river energy
Yassas Southbank is our flagship, and it's the most atmospheric venue for date night. You're right on the Yarra River, with views across the water to Flinders Street Station and the city skyline. If you're coming in summer, book for 5:30 to 6pm and you'll catch golden hour — the light on the river is genuinely beautiful, and it sets the tone for the whole evening.
The live charcoal spit adds theatre, the energy in the dining room is buzzy without being overwhelming, and if you're heading to the Arts Centre or a show at Hamer Hall afterwards, it's a two-minute walk. Pre-theatre dinner at Yassas is one of the best ways to start an evening on Southbank. Level M, 3 Southgate Ave — open 7 days.
Docklands — quiet, waterfront, intimate
Yassas Docklands at The District is the one we'd recommend if conversation is the priority. It's quieter than Southbank, the waterfront setting is lovely, and there's a more intimate feel to the dining room. If you're the kind of couple who wants to talk for three hours over wine and meze without shouting over a crowd, Docklands is your venue.
It's also a strong choice before or after events at Marvel Stadium. A proper Greek meal beats stadium food by a considerable margin. CW14A, 440 Docklands Drive — open 7 days.
Eastland and Craigieburn — relaxed and easy
Not every date needs a waterfront view. Sometimes the best dates are the low-key ones — especially early in a relationship when you want the energy to be relaxed rather than high-pressure. Our Eastland (Ringwood) and Craigieburn venues are inside their respective shopping centres, which means easy parking, no fuss about finding the place, and a casual atmosphere that lets the conversation do the work.
These venues serve the same menu, the same quality, the same halal-certified meats. The difference is the setting — and for a lot of dates, especially early ones, a relaxed setting is exactly right. Eastland: Shop R06, 175 Maroondah Hwy, Ringwood. Craigieburn: E08, 340 Craigieburn Road.

What to order on a date night
The key to a great date night order is variety and shareability. You don't want two identical plates — you want a spread that gives you both things to try, pass across, and talk about. Here's what we'd suggest:
- Start with meze — Tzatziki, saganaki (the flamed cheese is always a conversation starter), and warm pita. This is your opening act — something to pick at while you settle in and order drinks.
- Add a horiatiki salad — Proper Greek salad with chunked feta, ripe tomatoes, cucumber, olives and red onion. The acidity and freshness balances the richer dishes coming next.
- Two different mains to share — One lamb, one chicken. Or one meat and one seafood. The point is contrast — you each try both, and you have something to compare and discuss. Check our full menu for current options.
- Finish with loukoumades — Honey puffs. They're light, sweet, and the perfect way to end a meal without feeling heavy. If it's a special occasion, we can do something extra — just let us know when you book.
- A bottle of Assyrtiko — This is the classic Greek white wine. It's crisp and mineral with enough character to stand up to charcoal-grilled meats and meze alike. If you prefer red, ask for an Agiorgitiko — smooth, medium-bodied, and very easy to drink.
Celebrating anniversaries and special occasions
We host a lot of anniversary dinners, milestone birthdays, and "just because" celebrations. The process is simple: book via OpenTable, mention the occasion in the booking notes, and we'll make sure the evening feels special without being over the top. Greek hospitality is naturally warm — we don't need much prompting to look after you.
For anniversaries and special occasions, we'd particularly recommend the Feed Me option. It removes the decision-making entirely — you just sit down and let the food arrive. It's a progression of our best dishes, timed so you're never waiting and never rushed. Request a corner table or a window seat when you book, and you've got yourself an evening sorted.
Practical tips for your date night
- Book ahead — Especially for Southbank on Friday and Saturday evenings. OpenTable makes it quick, and you can add notes about the occasion or seating preference.
- Request a corner table — If you want a quieter spot, say so when you book. We'll do our best to accommodate.
- Don't overdress — Smart casual is the sweet spot at Yassas. You want to feel comfortable, not stiff. Greek dining is about enjoyment, not formality.
- Order to share — The whole point of Greek food is the shared table. Order a spread, put it in the middle, and eat together. It's better that way.
- Take your time — Greek meals aren't meant to be rushed. Nobody is hurrying you out the door. Stay for coffee, order one more round of loukoumades, enjoy the evening.
A note on halal dining for date night
All meats at Yassas are halal-certified. This matters for date night because it means neither of you has to worry about checking the menu or asking questions — you can just order. All four venues, every meat dish. It's been that way since we opened, and it means everyone can enjoy the meal without second-guessing anything.
Beyond dinner: brunch dates at Yassas
Not every date has to be dinner. Our bottomless brunch at Southbank and Docklands runs weekends and is a brilliant daytime date option. Greek meze, unlimited drinks, waterfront setting, and a completely different energy to an evening meal. It's particularly good for early-stage dates where a long dinner might feel like too much commitment — brunch is lighter, more casual, and you've got the rest of the day ahead of you.
